Biography

Cuoghi Corsello

Monica Cuoghi, Mantua 1965

Claudio Corsello, Bologna 1964

Based in Bologna

Cuoghi Corsello’s practice originated in the 1980s on the walls of the city of Bologna, where the two artists experimented with graffiti and tags as gestures of visual re-appropriation of the urban space. Their work manifested itself inside and outside the areas dedicated to art, also with the occupation of abandoned buildings and factories that were thus reactivated.

In the exhibition, they present a carpeting that unrolls like a sacred writing, painted through a procedure reminiscent of cadavre exquis. The subjects, chosen by the artists during the painting process, are imaginative and fairytale-like figures, but also events and landscapes chosen from a private archive of photographic images they captured. Cuoghi Corsello’s approach is a total and spiritual practice, radically intertwined to their private life but also to a fluid and magic conception of time. The use of spray paint, evocative of graffiti, leaves an ethereal trace on the carpeting, thereby creating a short circuit among presence, apparition and materiality.
