Biography

Caterina De Nicola

Ortona 1991

Lives in Zurich

Caterina De Nicola analyzes cultural aestheticization processes, examining motifs and trends emptied of meaning that circulate ideologically in society. An example is the symbol of the heart used in merchandising, smartphone emoticons or pacifist demonstrations, which the artist adopts and turns into a sculptural shape.

Erotic lnjury (2020) and Degrought Depletion (2020) rethink the expressive possibilities of sculpture by bringing together writing, painting and sculpture through the use of mash-up. The canvases on the walls are reminiscent of books and are made with found fabrics on which the artist sometimes applies writings deriving from a variety of contexts, from texts to pornographic magazines. The works that incorporate theory fiction – that is the necessity to touch upon specific themes through fiction – become hybrid forms, at the crossroads of painting and sculpture, artwork and design.
